What makes a good recording studio?
That's the million dollar question!
Who do you go to?
How much do you pay?
What do I get for my money?
So here goes I'm going to be honest right from the start and answer these (and other) questions here.
Firstly, who do you go to, well that's an easy one. It all depends on your budget and what you want to do. If money is no object then find out who the bands or singers you like use and go there. But I think money is all important and you have to cut your cloth according to your budget. So finding somewhere close to you would be good. The studio is only as good as the engineer recording you so don't worry about all the techy stuff like we've got a 48 channel desk and 48 reverb racks and the latest PC/MAC based software, ask what experience the engineer has of using it, ask for samples of their work (if they don't give you a sample don't book the studio)

How much do you pay? well again that depends on where you go, a studio hire will normanly cost from £80 - £120 per day, then you pay the engineer on top of that, again about the same rate (depending on experience) so anything from £160 +. Of couse their are also the bedroom boys, they charge by the hour or day for the complete package (just because you walk into someones back bedroom doesn't mean they can't do it) Get a sample .
At the end of your session you should get what you asked for, you came to do 3 songs then that's what you should get, sometimes the mix will be done later and sent on to you for approval (depends how long the session is).
