There is, most certainly, a risk factor in converting a much-loved animated
Disney production into a recognisable panto format but director Michael
Courtney appears to have succeeded where others may have struggled in the
attempt. Much credit must go to the revised book, written, too, by the
ubiquitous Courtney and a cast of players who appear to revel in combining the
two styles
Daniel Oliver (Prince) and Lauren Wood (Beauty) in Beauty and the Beast at
Campus West, Welwyn Garden City
Daniel Oliver plays a convincing Prince Philippe, doubling as the Beast,
while Lauren Wood is an unquestionable Beauty in both looks and indeed acting
talent. Comedy is provided by David McClelland as Jean Claude van Dumb and
Keith Myers proves to be a very excellent Dame. With some fine voices to carry
the musical score, plus the usual panto routines interlinking the story line,
the overall feeling at curtain down is one of sheer pleasure from an audience
that encompasses all age groups.
